Ankou
Falling Inside The Black,
My words. My thoughts.
|
Massive hoofs tramp over the thick underbrush of the forest. Ears prick forward, trying in vain to know where the stallion was going. Green lights shine through the creature’s visible skull where his eyes should be, giving off dim light in the darkness of the night. Wings hug close to the creature’s barrel so that they do not get rammed into trees. If there was skin on his face to show emotion his lips would be in a deep scowl. Ankou hated forests. They always ended up getting him tangled and hurt. His blindness did not allow him to know where all of the thick trees and vines were, his other senses not helping him very much. But it was his own fault that he came here. He was following the scent of water. His throat burned from thirst, it had been only two days since he last tasted the cool liquid, but to the stallion it felt like years. By know he should have known that wherever there was water there was bound to be trees, and he did realize this. But his need for the thirst quenching substance overrode his hatred of the foliage. And so the creature trudged on. Everything seemed to be going fine for him, the stallion moved slowly so that he could feel when something was lower or higher than the normal ground, the trees were high enough so that he did not have to worry about his antlers being tangled in leaves and vines. But this good luck did not last for long. Ankou misjudged one step and tripped over a thick root that sprouted from the ground. The equine’s massive size sent him tumbling forward, but his bad luck did not end there. Ankou had the misfortune of tripping down a hill, his large body twisting and turning all the way down. Once he landed on solid ground the stallion laid for a while. His breathing was labored, the wind making a particular sound while it moved through his bone nose .Ankou could tell that the intensive movement caused his blood flow to increase, meaning that his open wounds were bleeding more than usual. The scent of death around him sharply grew. A deep sigh escaped the bone teeth of the creature, then with one great exert of energy he stood his massive carcass back up. His form shook, removing the leaves from his pelt, though many got tangled in his thick mane and tail, adding to the collection that had already built up. Despite these bad things happening to the stallion one good omen appeared. The smell of water was closer to him. With this knowledge the stallion picked up his pace a bit, but he did not take into account that these trees were slightly shorter, growing closer to the ground so that their vines reached the stallion. Ankou’s antlers were just the right height to end up getting trapped in the web like mess of the vines. Soon he was so tangled that he could not move. The creature let out an exasperated yell. Why did the universe hate him so? Was it because of his past? The one that he tried so hard to forget but haunted the backs of his eyelids? He was a murderer. A betrayer. A perfectly good reason for the world to be cruel to him. But why couldn’t it just let him die? He would be much happier then. He would find peace in the black void. But death was not allowed to come to him. He was cursed to walk the world as a beast, a monster. With all of the anger that shot through the creature’s veins at these thoughts Ankou raised onto his massive hind legs. With one quick jerk of his body he landed back on all fours, a massive shaking of the earth ensued and all of the vines were severed, left to hang about the creature’s horns. With a triumphant snort Ankou continued on. Now he was more careful, he held his large cranium closer to the ground, his body snaking through the forest. He must have been quite a sight. A grotesque monster woven into the forest, making his predatorial way through the land. But he did not care. No one dared to come to him at any time, they would all run from him at the slightest look. The Reaper! They would all scream. As if he would steal their souls and eat their flesh. But that was not him. He would not hurt a soul. But no equine dared to risk their lives to find that out. So, here he was. A nightmare stalking the night alone. As the creature moved forward the sweet scent of water grew closer and closer until Ankou’s large hooves were trodding on slick, wet, stone. Not many steps after this the stallion found water. Ankou plunged his protruding bone face into the water, taking in thick gulps of the liquid. When his thirst was finally quenched the beast lifted his head. But he was not finished. Soon his pillar like legs moved him deeper into the water until it reached the middle of his chest. His large wings spread themselves out, just gracing the top of the water. Ankou could feel the water seeping into his wound on his barrel, but he did not mind, it would find its way out again. As he stood there the creature felt something that he was not used to, peace. The wind was just slightly blowing, ruffling the feathers on his wings and moving his banners gently. The sound of the water was calming. If he had eyelids the creature would close them in satisfaction. A deep and somewhat happy sigh resonating from the thing’s throat. Surely this happiness could not last for long, but Ankou would soak it up while he could. Slipping Through The Cracks. [/blockquote]

It was a beautiful evening and through the rainforest the ghastly mare went, trotting at a leisurely place. Shadows licked along her slender bodice making her chocolate and ivory coat appear much darker. Her mane was a shade of cream and white, falling in waves and curls past her shoulder. The first thing anyone could see however was the mare’s stitched up smile, an eerie sight amidst the darkness. That is …if one can see. Her white pillars came to a halt, and she paused at the pool of water before her. It was a much welcomed sight and a nice break from the constant humidity that surrounded her. The vixen dipped her ghastly crown into the water and began to take a drink. Slowly but surely she began to step into the water, wading until she was chest deep.
crunch, crunch, thud.
Estalai lifted her head at the sounds of the crackling foliage. Auds perked forward and rose colored orbs began to search for the source of the sound. Sure enough from out of the tree line came an unsteady stallion barreling towards the water. He looked as if he had been in a fight and was dying of thirst. He plunged his muzzle into the water, quenching his thirst. The mare’s nostrils flared, taking in the newcomers scent as she stood there motionless in the water careful to not make even a ripple in the water. She was surprised the brute hadn’t even acknowledged her. Maybe he didn’t think that she was much of a threat?
Her orbs traced his frame and noticed an obvious similarity. He, like her, had a familiar facial marking. Although her markings were superficial his looked to be quite real. A million questions rushed through her mind but she was so unsure of just what her next move would be, the last thing she wanted to do was startle the beast. She hoped however that he would do her no harm. Clearing her throat she took a step backwards towards the shore. ”Excuse me , sir…I didn’t mean to bother you…are you alright?” Her words were soft and smooth like velvet. It was obvious she was concerned about his wounds. An awkward and bashful smile crossed her permanently grinning lips, and she tilted her head somewhat uncomfortably. ” I can’t help but notice you seem hurt…”

Ankou
Falling Inside The Black,
My words. My thoughts.

This peace, it was perfection. It had been some time since the stallion felt this happy. Well not exactly happy. That was not a possibility for this cursed being. Monotone maybe? He wasn't worried, that was different, a good change. He was alone, something that he always was now that he was deformed, but the solitude granted the stallion peace. Ankou always told himself that he was fine with this solitude. He thrived in his loneliness, he loved it. And in a way he was right, he had learned to acknowledge that most would not wish to be around him and so he accepted this solitude. It was normal for him now. But there was a place, deep down in the back of his darkened mind, that longed for companionship. He wanted to be accepted. Ankou wanted to be accepted for who he was, grotesque form and all. He wanted a friend, someone to confide in and break down all of his walls. But that would be impossible. No one would befriend the Grim Reaper. As Ankou rested in the water something caught his attention, there was a new smell in the air. Well, not new, the stallion had just not caught the smell before, he was too interested in the water. There was another creature here, another equine. Ankou threw his massive head into the air, his bone nose taking in the air heavily trying to find where this creature was. His ears swivel back and forth ferociously, trying to catch any sound that the equine might make. Finally a sound does come to the stallion. But it is not of an attack, or of hooves running away like the boy had expected. Instead it was of velveteen lyrics. This sound startled the beast, sending his large wings clapping to his sides with a burst of water, his head being thrown even higher into the sky. The lyrics were easily characterized as female. But Ankou knew that a woman was just as dangerous as a man. The mares here were as cunning, and vicious as any of the stallions. The soft voice meant nothing, it could just be a ploy. Oh what the stallion wouldn't give for his sight back. If he could see he would be able to know what the mare looked like, if she seemed kind or malicious. At this moment Ankou knew nothing, he was going in blind, literally. The words were strange though, asking him if he was ok. Saying that he seemed hurt. At this statement a dark chuckle rumbled from his thick barrel. Hurt? These wounds did not hurt him anymore. Or if they did his body had become so accustomed to the pain that it was not felt anymore. Ankou did not answer right away. The stallion knew that there was no way that he could get away from this equine, he was much too large to make a speedy get away. That and he had no idea where he was going and would probably end up flying down a ditch. So, his best chance was to talk to the being. Hopefully she meant him no harm. If she did? Well Ankou would have to rely on his brute strength and size. So, he did what he normally would not do, speak. "No ma'am I am nor hurt. I have been cursed with these wounds for many years now." His voice was dark and rough, showing how little he used them. After his words the stallion's ears twitched. What did he do now? It had been a very long time since Ankou had actually had a conversation with another equine. But he looked back far into his past, into the schooling that his parents had given him. Well, if he was going to try and play this safe he might as well be polite about it. I am called Ankou. After his words the stallion gave a slight bow of his head. He was finished. The formalities that he knew of were out of the way. Now it was up to the mare. Slipping Through The Cracks. [/blockquote]

Estalai stood silently, facing the ravenous wind that kissed her lips and knotted her tresses. She was a pale faced ghost looking out across the water towards a beast who seemed fairly alarmed by her sincerest words. Below her waves began to roll and batter against her body, stirred up by the movements of the massive beast before her. Unable to understand why the stallion had reacted in such a manner, silence filled the gap between the two. She watched behind confused eyes as the colossal stallion decided just how to respond to the mare’s questions. Taking a few steps forward, the ghoul lowered her crown. Not in a submissive way but cautiously, as if she was frightened of scaring him off.
”Cursed? Whatever do you mean?” Estalai frowned. Was there something wrong with him? Why was he acting so oddly? Was he…going blind? Now, one might be surprised she dawned on this conclusion so quickly, but then again, the mare was a healer. In fact, if she was experienced enough she would have tried to heal him right then and there! “And forgive me, sir…my name is Estalai.”s she murmured softly, words rolling sweetly off her tongue. Estalai watched the stallion, who called himself Aknou, inquisitive orbs tracing over his damaged charcoal frame. He was so tall….Estalai could hardly believe it. He made her look like a pony…which wasn’t hard considering she was as short as she was. Although there were many fascinating features that donned the stallion such as his antlers and wings, she couldn’t stop her eyes from roaming back to his wounds. They looked so agonizing. Guilt began to constrict the mare; she wanted nothing more than to ease the pain of this stranger. Maybe it was their similarities, maybe it was her compassionate nature, nevertheless the little mare found herself intrigued by the brute before her. Blind and in that state all alone, surely that would take quite a toll on anyone.
”Are you alone? I could stay with you if you’d like, watch over you…I’m…. Coming closer, please don’t run.” The ghoul asked politely. Estalai was not a fighter of any sort but she couldn’t just leave the poor fellow. In his state it would be hard to defend himself from any predators. With troubled thoughts the chocolate and cream mare glided through the water, even closer to Aknou. No, matter how hard she tried to remove her stare, she continued to watch him through blushing pink eyes. With each step taken, her mind drifted away. She wondered if loneliness had plagued him, as it had plagued herself. Uncertainty gnawed at her and self-doubt consumed whatever was left. The mare was unsure if she should really be approaching the beast. After all her instincts were not the best and she always trusted far too easily, was she just being foolish?

Ankou
Falling Inside The Black,
My words. My thoughts.
|
Ankou could hear the mare take a step towards him. His large head tucked itself deep into his neck, shying from the movement but not actually backing away. A slight snort shooting from his bone nose. There was something about this mare. There were no dangerous vibes radiating from her, like most of the equines that would attack him. Ankou had gotten very good at reading horses motives over the years of his misfortunes. And still he did not trust himself. Sure this mare’s lyrics seemed sweet and sincere. She did not move towards him in a dangerous way, she actually moved towards him cautiously, as if she did not want to frighten him away. But what should she care if he left? Wouldn’t she be happy about that? To be rid of his grotesque form from her sight? Most equines were. Most wanted him gone as soon as they saw him. They would either run from Ankou themselves or attack him and cause him to run from them. Either way they got rid of him. But this mare? She acted in a way that seemed as if she wanted him to stay, did not want him to run. But that was ridiculous. No one would want him to stay with them. Not while he was this monstrous beast. As these thoughts swirled about the creature’s open mind the mare’s lyrics once again lifted into the silent air. The mare asked him what he meant about his curse. Could she not see? Did she not realize the creature that he was? “Have you not heard the stories? The tales of The Grim Reaper?” A deep chuckle resonated from his body. Was she trying to play a game? Surely she was, no equine would not understand that he was cursed. “The portal to this land did this to me. Ripped the skin from my bones, grew these strange horns from my skull, made these devilish wings sprout from my back. It blinded me so that I have been forced to walk this land alone unsure of where I am headed. So yes, I would say that I am cursed.” His voice was much darker than he remembered it. Once when he was happy it was light and airy. Now it was harsh and cold, somewhat uncaring though that was the exact opposite of how the equine was. His laugh bubbled up from his body like a brook back then. Now it chocked through his rough throat as if it did not wish to get out. He wanted to be happy again. He hoped for it dearly. But Ankou knew that these curses that he had just spoken of would not allow it. They made him be alone, so that his life was empty and filled with darkness. His soul was broken by the portal along with his body. After Ankou announced his name this mare gave him hers. This was strange. No equine that he had met before had allowed their names to grace his ears. If there were lips on the equine’s face then he would smile. But instead he settled for a slight bob of the head. He would not give the statement, ‘a pleasure to meet you’, as he would have in his previous life. It was polite, but Ankou was not yet sure if this meeting of the mare would be pleasurable. It had been so far, but horses here were known to change on a dime. Once more the mare spoke, but these words startled the boy, his wings once again clapping to his sides. She asked him if he was alone. Did it seem as if any equine would wish to be around him? That was insanity. She then made an even more insane statement. She said that she could stay with him. The stallion’s large head tilted to the side, his ears pinning back to his head. “Do not play games with me mare!” His voice was angry, a large hoof striking the water. “I have been in solitude with my curse for so long that I know no creature wishes to stay with me. No one befriends The Reaper.” These spoken words were not as angry as the ones before. They were lathered with the emotion of sorrow. He hated his solitude. He prayed that someone would break his curse and allow him the beauty of a companion. But he knew that this was not an option. And this cruel game that the mare was playing did not help the situation. As Ankou listened more words came from the mare. She was moving closer to him, she did not want him to run. His head once more tucked into his neck, a light snort pushed from his throat. But, again she was not being aggressive. No, she was being cautious once more. She even said herself that she did not want him to run. Did she mean what she said? Would she be willing to be under the deathly shadow of The Reaper? Was Ankou willing to take the risk that hoping would play on his heart? For now he settled with stretching his nape out, moving his bone like skull out to where her voice was coming. It was not aggressive, it was much like a move that an equine would give when first meeting a new one, a friendly greeting only this was given by a monstrous skeleton. It was her turn now. Either her game would play out or Ankou’s nightmare would end. Slipping Through The Cracks. [/blockquote]

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,500,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][bg=020202] ”Speech”
A warm smile crept upon the ghoul’s lips. “I tend not to believe every story I hear, sir. If I did I’m afraid I’d be quite loony….living my life in constant paranoia and all.” She answered, honestly and as the mare listened to the stallion’s heart wrenching tale about his travel through the rift her rose colored orbs widened in surprise. The Grim Reaper…So the stories were true? Estalai kept her mouth shut, in a desperate attempt to stop from making a fool out of herself. So many questions rolled through her mind. Despite her enthusiasm, she continued on albeit hesitantly unsure of how to act in front of such a legend. Yes, to the ghoul faced mare the stallion standing before came straight out of a fable and although Estalai was quite intrigued by this stallions trials and tribulations there was an ever-growing need to help him. To heal him. To ease his suffering. How completely awful…She thought to herself, imagining just one day in his life. The rift can be so cruel…
Waves splashed once again into Estalai as the beast disturbed the water, startled by her words. Then on one more occasion as he began to speak of her nonexistent games. This time she was much closer to him, and she was sure he could feel the liquid ricochet off of her bodice. The mare wasn’t in what a normal equine would consider personal space, but Ankou was not your normal everyday equine. In seconds she moved away fearful she had scared the stallion and upset him. ”I’m sorry, if I’m too close!! I can back up….and I..I don’t know what games you’re referring too…” She shuffled herself so far back that the water was almost up to her crown before she decided that this was not a good way to properly carry on a conversation. Estalai made her way back towards shore and stood parallel to Ankou, a respective distance away.
”You are wrong.” The ghoul said boldly. ”I am not every creature. Maybe others are scared of you…but I can see you are hurting…and justifiably so.” After defying the stallion’s opinion, pillars were on edge ready to dodge whatever wings or antlers could potentially head her way. Estalai was not like other equines he had come across. Her heart was full of compassion and sincerity. She sympathized with Ankou and all he had suffered broke the mare’s heart. She too felt alone. Her exterior didn’t exactly match who she was on the inside. She too had been feared, abandoned, and tormented. Never to poor Ankou’s extent but she could feel the loneliness radiate from him. Something she knew all too well.
A soft breeze pushed by them, caressing her warm body. It felt so soothing amongst the humid air. She pondered for a brief moment. Imagining how the tall stallion before her looked before the rift had its way with him. The mere thought disgusted her. He surely had to have been a sight to see. From what was left she imagined a tall, dark, and handsome stallion minus the all of the extra appendages. He was well built, holding his crown proudly, and on that thought Estalai realized that he had extended his nape towards her. A smile made its way across her kissers. Auds perked forward and nares flared as her own neck stretched out towards him. ”I meant what I said you know…” she reassured him, sincerity swelling with each syllable. “I could be your eyes…even just for a little while…I won’t be much of a bother, sir.” She murmured softly, lyrics filling the empty space between the two. ”Unless you’re hell-bent on death and destruction…I don’t do evil well.” she added jokingly.

Ankou
Falling Inside The Black,
My words. My thoughts.
|
The mare’s sweet lyrics once again lifted into the air. She spoke of how she did not always believe in what she heard, due to the fact that she would go crazy if she did. At this Ankou chuckled slightly. This mare was quite different. Most equines chose to listen to any crazy story that they were told just because it came from the mouth of another equine. They would live their lives in insane paranoia, all because of some rumor that fell from the lips of another uninformed equine. But apparently this was not the way of the mare Estalai. This caused Ankou to grow a slight respect for her, if she was above listening to crazy rumors then there was something good about the mare. But he also knew that even when you did not listen to rumors of beasts that lurked the night their faces still hid in the shadows of the mind, haunting dreams and thoughts. “Then you are better than many equines ma’am.” His head bobbed slightly once more, another replacement for a smile. Oh how he wished to have his old form back. So that he could smile at this mare, see if her looks reflected the sweet tone of her voice. He would have to guess as to how she looked now, though he would never chose to do that. Every equine that he met stayed a grey outline so that he would not make judgments about them based upon unknown characteristics. Only judging them by their voice and their actions. As Ankou struck out into the water with his anger at the mare’s strange words he could hear her shuffle backwards, moving away from the stallion. A snort passes through his bone face. Maybe she would leave him now. Leave him to his solitude and wallowing. He had managed to run off the only creature that had dared to stay with him for any long amount of time. But she did not run. Instead she chose to circle back to him; though this time she was much farther from him. She apologized for possibly being too close and spoke that she did not know what games he spoke of. At this Ankou tossed his head lightly. He just could not figure this mare out. “The games that every equine plays with me.” His voice is a deep rumble, the stallion’s brain racing trying to decide if this mare was sincere or not. “The game of tricking the devilish ghoul into believing that someone, somehow, wishes to be with him. Then tearing down all of those hopes in a wicked show and leaving him alone. Leaving me to rot.” Again his words were no longer angry, now they were only filled with the sorrow that seemed to follow him and never leave. “I have had that happen too many times in my cursed life. I will be dead before I let it happen again.” But he knew this was not true. He was too naïve, too hopeful that someday someone would befriend him, and so he would walk right into the trap of the game again. But he wanted this mare to at least believe that he would not do this, maybe then she would know that her game would not work. All the while that he spoke a thought flit about his mind. Telling him that she was not playing a game, she was sincere. This thought seemed to ring true; there was nothing in her voice that seemed sinister. She had not acted out towards him. So he decided to do something rash. He would trust her. Ankou had given Estalai his warning before, that he would not allow any games to be played upon him and so he hoped that she would listen to those words. Ankou believed that she would and so he put his trust in the mare that he could not see. Estalai spoke of not being every creature, that she was not afraid of him. Something that was a strange thought to the stallion. Everyone was scared of The Reaper. She then mentioned that he must be hurting, and that this was understandable. The stallion shook his head at this. “These wounds have not caused me pain for many years.” He knew that the mare was most likely not talking about the pain from his wounds, instead the pain of his past and his mistreatment. But Ankou would not yet open up about that fully. He had given her all she would receive for the time. His past hurt was far too vivid and strong for him to share it with just anyone. And though Ankou had decided to place his trust in this mare he was not sure if it was well placed yet, and so his past would stay his own for now. Ankou could hear the telltale sound of a smile crossing lips as the stallion reached his strange face to the mare. It had been a long time since that sound graced his ears. Then the stallion could feel the mare move her own head towards him, though he could not sense where she was enough for him to close the gap between them. He would have to settle for this closeness, one that he had not experienced since his curse was laid upon him. Once more her words were spoken into the air. She said that she meant what she said, that she could be his eyes, that she would not be a bother. At this a lighter laugh past the boney jaw of the stallion. “I can assure you that there is no scenario where I see you being of any bother to me, ma’am.” It was his strange form of a compliment, saying that her presence would not bother him. With his lack of communication in the past years it was the least he could do. “I am sure that having you for a companion, for even a short amount of time would bring light to my dark travels, but I would not burden one such as yourself with my grotesque form.” Estalai spoke once more, a joke, something the stallion had not heard in years. Saying that she would not travel with him if he was anything like his rumors. “I am sorry to say that I am nothing like my rumors.” At this another laugh bubbled up from his barrel. Oh what a change good company could make. Slipping Through The Cracks. [/blockquote]

”Then it’s settled. You are officially stuck with me, sir! Though I must warn you I can’t fight to save my life..” A bright peel of laughter was emitted; as Estalai tossed her crown in amusement, not too far out in order to prevent from knocking Ankou in the head. ”I can assure you, that you will not serve as a burden to me. In fact it might actually keep others from trying to pick a fight! We’re quite the pair, we are. Except you make me look like a pony! You’re so tall!~” Sing songly lyrics filled the Reaper’s auds, the mare taking a step closer to her new companion. She dared not tell him just why they might be so intimidating to others; her looks weren’t exactly screaming ‘be my friend’ either. Instead she tried to end her statement on a positive note how the way he looked could be beneficial for their travels. She was always one to try and build someone up, dishing out advice and compliments to others that she couldn’t adhere to herself.
Rosy orbs continued to watch the stranger gently, wanting so badly to extend her crown just a tad bit further to touch the beast. She blew a breath quietly through pursed lips; the one she had been holding apprehensively as though it might send the stallion barreling away from her towards the trees. Estalai wasn’t sure he could even feel her breath against his weathered skull but it was an action that was meant to show The Reaper just how close she was to him. As the stallion joked about his rumors, Estalai couldn’t help but giggle at them herself. ”I am certainly glad to hear that! It’s why equines shouldn’t be so quick to judge a horse by his coat.” Her whispering voice was once more full of sincerity, floating through the flood of her many thoughts. She found herself connecting so well with, Ankou. It had been so long since she had felt any sort of connection with anyone. Besides the forced ‘hellos’ and ‘how are yous’ as someone passed by, accidently locking eyes with her. A real genuine connection was something she so desperately longed for.
Always so easily influenced and manipulated. Estalai felt another trickle of a smile make it’s away across her velvets. The Reaper’s acceptance of her offer warmed her core. She found greater respect and appreciation for his kindness and hoped the two might be able to heal each other along their journeys. At the very least she planned to do everything in her power to become strong enough so that she could heal her friend. Friend… Estalai hadn’t had one of those since she was a little filly. The word was so simple yet it reached out and touched her heart. Hauling her from that shell she so willingly allowed herself to hide within. She could only hope that when and if she healed him; he would want to stick around. She didn’t want her exterior to unintentionally mock her dear friend.

Ankou
Falling Inside The Black,
My words. My thoughts.

Estalai’s happy lyrics once again lifted into the air, gracing the Ankou’s now perked up ears. She said that he was stuck with her. What a strange statement. Stuck was not the word that he would use. More like graced with. Ankou in no way deserved the kindness of this mare. He had been rash to her, believing that she was playing games with him when in reality she was just being sweet, he had been rude. And yet she chose to look past this and to look past his monstrous form, a daunting task, and chose to be kind. She chose to be around him through all of those things, chose to be his companion. So no, he was not stuck with her, in many ways she was stuck with him. But Ankou did not voice these opinions. Instead he kept his bone mouth shut, allowing only a chuckle to pass through it. He did not want to risk speaking too much and causing this mare to run from him. The mare then spoke of how he would not be a burden to her, that he would keep many from picking a fight. This statement confused the stallion. What did she mean by picking a fight? Had others teased her? But what reason would they have to do that to this sweet mare. Once more Ankou wished for his sight, so that he could look upon this sweet mare and see what she spoke of. But he figured that since she did not go further into the subject she did not want to speak of it, so the stallion did not question her. He only listened to more lyrics that rolled from her lips. She made a statement about how Ankou made her look like a pony. At that the creature laughed heartedly. The stallion was aware that he was massive in his size. “Yes, I tend to dwarf even some of the tallest horses.” It was the happiest that the stallion’s voice had been in a while. Now that his world had lightened so had his mind. By some miracle the world that tended to frown upon the creature was now smiling happy upon him. It decided to grace him with the gift of a companion. Someone to share in his world, to break down his loneliness. And though he was happy for this the stallion could not shake the fear of losing this gift. If that was to happen, if Ankou was to know the joy of having this mare as a friend and he was to lose her, it would surely break any soul that the creature had left. But the stallion gently shook his head and rid his mind of those thoughts. Now was not the time to think of such things. Estalai told Ankou that because he did not reflect his rumors she believed that was why horses should not be judged by their pelt. Ankou nodded his head in happy agreement but he caught something strange in the mare’s lyrics. As if she knew what it was like to be judged by appearance. Oh how the stallion wished that he was blessed with the sight that he once held. At her words the stallion slightly tilted his head to the mare, but he did not voice any question. If Estalai did not wish to share her history with him the equine did not blame her. He had not shared all of his with her. Surely she would leave him if he did. Once the mare knew that he was a betrayer, a murderer, she would want nothing to do with him. And Ankou would not blame her for this. But the boy did not want to lose the mare and so he did not speak of his past. Maybe she would never have to know. And if she did learn one day? Well hopefully she would have grown so close to him that she would not leave him alone, once again. Now there was silence around the group of two. Ankou was not sure how to continue the conversation but he knew that he did not want it to end, so he decided to ask a question that had been wandering about his mind the second the mare offered to journey with him. “Where shall we go, My Lady.” His old ways of chivalry were slightly coming back to his mind. Though he was grotesque in form Ankou wanted to show Estalai that he was not so in manners. His head once more bobbed; his form of a lipless smile. Hopefully the mare knew that he was trying, surely she could see that. Slipping Through The Cracks. [/blockquote]
