» The biting night breeze was an unwelcome witness to the birth of Odette's first foal, but the due course of nature would not deviate from its path for such trifling issues as weather. Shivering involuntarily, the pale Andalusian mare drew her single wing up closer to herself in an effort to stave off the cold, a feeble defense against the whistling winds that swept ghostly white feathers into disarray as she trudged steadily onwards. She was a hardy little thing, usually remarkably resistant to cold temperatures, but tonight the harsh gale coupled with the damp sweat upon her hide and the fear in her gut to create an icy chill that she simply could not shake. Another contraction clenched her stomach without warning, prompting a startled squeak to escape from her lips, and Odette glanced around frantically in search of shelter that might protect her and her soon-to-be-born young one from either predators or the elements - each no less deadly than the other.
» Unfortunately, this was the Thalmic Prairie, and she had been caught completely by surprise with the sudden onset of both labor and the storm. She could have sworn some higher power was conspiring against her - no sooner had the stars been blackened out with storm clouds and the winds began howling than her foal had decided now was the time to be born. Finding shelter in the middle of the Prairie was an overly optimistic pursuit; unable to bear it any longer, Odette's legs folded and she gingerly lowered her heavily pregnant frame to the earth. She felt incredibly small and vulnerable, out here in the open surrounded by vast earth and the cold, uncaring heavens, not to mention at the mercy of her own physiology. Where was he? Did he even know his child was about to be born, would he come find her? Squeezing her eyes shut, the young mare clung desperately to the last of her coherent thoughts as racking pain and sheer instinct began fighting for dominance in her mind. She hadn't even the faintest idea what she was doing, that was for certain - no experienced mare had talked her through the process or taught her what to expect before she had jumped into the rabbit hole of motherhood. But a stubborn little part of her clung fiercely to the belief that everything would turn out alright, that she would instinctively know how to be a mother, and that for once the gods would reward her diligence and faith with a little piece of heaven of her own.

He was needed again, or so it seemed. He was not one to meddle in the affairs of others, especially when it came to mortals, except for specific circumstances such as this. While the laboring mare was unaware of his presence, he overlooked the proceedings. It seemed as though he was not truly needed, for the babe in question was born healthy. Listening to the healthy colt's heartbeat made the God pleased, casting an unseen smile upon the new mother and her child, before fading away.

He hardly noticed the stinging wind and fierce cold, his thick wolf like fur a protective barrier against the unforgiving weather. The icy rain rolled off his coarse outer coat, the downy fluff beneath it just warm and dry. The drops rolled like tears down his face, and dripped like liquid diamonds along the porcelain curves and points of his elegant antlers. Where was she? He'd been drawn away on a surprising business-- called upon by the god Apollo. Much to his displeasure, this business had tugged him away from his beloved Odette, and finally, growing tired and restless among the holy temples, he'd traveled day and night to return to his home, to the love of his life. And he hadn't technically kept count of the passing days, but he knew that the very real possibility of coming home to his first born was upon him.
Strides stilled as he paused, drawing air over his nostrils. Musty scents rolled through him, veiled by the fresh, natural scent of the rain. Disappointment flooded him, gaze dragging across the smokey gray expanse of the prairie. "Odette!" The wind whipped the word from his lips, ripping it to pieces until it was nothing but a noiseless rush of air. Useless. Frustration flowed through his veins, and sharp hooves dug into the golden ground, tearing him forward as a whinny tore from his throat. She was here. She had to be.
He bolted through the open field, eyes searching wildly for a hint of snow white and golden curl in the devastating storm. And then.. there is was. He sat down on his haunches, sliding in the thick mud as he put on the brakes, spinning on his hocks to switch directions. She was down, out in the open. A wave of panic washed over him, adrenaline fueling his fire as he rocketed forward, to her side. "Odette!" Desperation clung to the words. "Odette, Detta, my love, I'm here, I'm here!" Panic laced the lyrics, as he ducked his head down, muzzle pressing to her neck just as the sudden realization that she was labor rocked his world, shaking him down to his very core.
In a fluid move, he was down beside her, shielding her body from the icy wind and rain with his deceivingly thick frame. "I'm so sorry, Odette, I'm sorry," He murmured gently to her as the contractions of labor overtook her. "I'm here. I love you. I'm here and I love you." He repeated over and over again, majestic antlers dipping over her in a protective fashion. And all too suddenly it was over, and in a tangled, messy heap on the cold, damp ground was a snowy colt riddled with golden and ebony markings. Upon his head were small, soft charcoal spots signaled the eventual growth of antlers, and resting just beneath his withers were two small, feathery black wings, glittering golden feathers sprinkled throughout the deep ashen expanse.
Immediately his breath was whisked away from him as the precious colt fumbled weakly about in the pouring rain, steam rising from his warm body as the cool air brushed against him. "You did it!" Overwhelmed with joy, he buried his muzzle into her golden curls, breathing in her fresh scent. "I'm so sorry I was gone. I'm here now. I'm here." He breathed gently, eyes resting on the spindly legged colt just as the rain let up, slowing to a drizzle, thunder rumbling in the distance. "I love you."
