Dawn was leaking across the landscape, rivulets of warm golden light trickling past the treetops and wooded ridges. A good deal of it pooled in the low-lying plain below, illuminating the dewy grass with a brilliancy that could have taken a viewer’s breath away. For one in particular, it wasn’t just the beauty of the scene that moved her, but the irrefutable forces behind the sight. “Surely the Gods are good,” she murmured in an awed, reverent voice. From her post midway up a rise in the prairie, the world unrolled like a glimmering golden carpet before her hooves. While the vista was truly a beautiful one, a chill wind whipped playfully about, reminding the mare with a shiver that Stormscome was upon them. For the moment the skies were clear, though the wet grasses and quietly dripping trees evidenced last night’s storm. It had been of average intensity and duration, but was enough to keep Atalya in the refuge of thick foliage. With a stretch of her arabesque neck, the sunset-toned female strolled forward in a leisurely manner, bound to appreciate the sight provided by the Divines. status;; done. word count;; only 190, but it serves its purpose :U music;; Appalachian Spring - Aaron Copland tagged;; odette & baby! :D (closed) notes;; will get longer! c;

» Odette was an early riser, even if her son was not. When the sun peeked over the eastern ridge to smile into the Thalmic Prairie, the fair lady was up and awake to greet him, milk-white coat shining bright as snow, long curled tresses soaking up the sunlight to gleam molten gold. Motherhood suited her well, no doubt. Pregnancy had been hard on her body, so freshly recovered from both physical and emotional trauma alike, but she had borne through it bravely, and with each passing day after foaling she was looking ever happier and more radiant, health bolstered by a loving family and the presence of young Theoden.
» At the thought of her son she glanced down at the sleeping grey and black bundle on the ground near her hooves, nestled up against the roots of a large overhanging tree, and she was unable to resist a gentle smile curving over her lips. Sometimes she still had difficulty believing that he was truly hers, born of her flesh and with her blood in his veins. He was perfect, almost too perfect to be real - beautiful, regal, astonishingly like his noble father, yet with subtle infusions of her own line. Infusions like, say, the little wings on his back - too small yet to fly with, still fledging, but their mere presence on her foal had made Odette weep with joy on more than one occasion. When the tears would come no more, she could only smile, and she had scarcely stopped smiling ever since.
» Turning away from her colt, she carefully moved away a few steps - not too far, for she would never part from her child, willingly or otherwise, but enough so that he could slumber away the dawn undisturbed and she could graze while keeping her watchful eye on him. Raising a foal might have been one of the happiest things she had yet experienced, but it was also very tiring, and rare quiet moments like these were to be enjoyed and cherished, which she did readily. A sound from behind, however, interrupted the quiet early morning lull, and suddenly Odette was alert as a startled deer. Not frightened or nervous, not yet at least, but alert and watchful, and she turned immediately to search for the source of the noise, which had sounded rather like someone approaching.
» And lo and behold, a stranger emerged from between the treetrunks, some of the only foliage and shelter to be found in this wide-open land. With the passing of Greenscome and the imminent arrival of the stormy season, it was little wonder that the inhabitants of Thalmic were seeking shelter here. Yet she was no inhabitant of Thalmic, or Odette would have recognized her on sight. No, she was a mare painted in breathtaking hues of pink, indigo, and creamy peach, such that the simple white femme had never seen before. For a split second Odette was mesmerized by the beautiful sight, like a lovely vision risen from the dawn mists, but then protective maternal instinct took over, and she became determined to know who she was and what she was doing here. Besides, she was Thanatos's mate, and his representative when he was absent - she had to act like it. Drawing her head up to its full height, she called out quietly, "Hello there, my lady. Yours is a new face in Thalmic; might I inquire after your name and business? I am Odette, mate to Thanatos."

It was small wonder that Atalya had missed her unexpected companion, what with such a radiant sunrise to appreciate. But still, it was with a soft intake of breath that her eyes caught - and held - to the statuesque ivory figure peering in a wary manner toward her post at the treeline. There was almost a wary quality to the keen glance directed at her, and Alya automatically dropped her head, ears twitching in a slightly too-casual effort at looking like a nonthreat. She was, after all, a stranger in this region. No matter how placid she was, how little harm she meant to anyone or anything, miscommunications weren’t impossible.
“Good morrow to you,” she called in a level, calm tone. For half a heartbeat she waited, watching the feminine creature carefully for a cue. This other, however, didn’t seem all too inclined to moving. ‘I am the stranger, I ought to go to her.’ Slim, fawn-colored legs slipped with a soft sh-sh noise through the tall, damp grass, and the mare soon felt the chill of dew soaking her fur. Bell-like tones spoke with a gentle sort of authority and assuredness, and Atalya picked out the key pieces of information with a genial bob of her head. “Odette, a lovely name,” she came to a stop several paces short of the creamy white mare, noting with a surge of silent sympathy the stump that was left of one wing. “Forgive my intrusion, my name is Atalya; a mere wanderer. I’d thought I might have reached the Thalmic Prairie, but I’m glad to have it confirmed by a native such as yourself. If I am not mistaken, Thanatos rules this region, does he not?”
To keep herself from seeming rude by staring, she cast another golden-eyed gaze around the dawn-lit grassland. Morning was well and truly upon them, and Atalya could feel the welcome warmth of sunlight washing over her in spite of the chilling combination of breeze and dew. It was as she re-surveyed the surrounding area that she saw it; a small shadow and depression in the grass just behind Odette. No, not just a depression. It was a foal. With the slightest hint of a knowing smile playing about her muzzle, she let her lengthy amethyst tail sweep the dewy grass. “I can move on, if you’d prefer privacy. I’d not to wake a small certain someone.”

» Were it not for the foal slumbering in the shade of the nearby tree, Odette would have been glad to approach the beautiful stranger and greet her warmly, but thankfully Atalya, as she introduced herself, was perfectly willing to approach of her own accord. Odette did her best to express her appreciation for the gesture with a small, winsome smile, and in perfect accordance with the manners she had been taught as a filly she thanked Alya prettily for the compliment. The sunset-hued femme had a gracious and kindly manner about her, and the pegasus mare was grateful for such pleasant company. "There is nothing to forgive; all wanderers like yourself are more than welcome to the hospitality of the clan," she said without hesitation, a gracious smile lighting up her features despite the perpetual melancholy cast that seemed to be worked into her very core. No matter whose leadership the Thalmic clan passed under, that particular principle seemed never to change or waver, and Odette was glad for it - it was one of the traits that made her so proud to be a part of this particular family, rather than the selective, exclusive, and elitist bands that populated the Peninsula and Couloir.
» "I'm afraid your information is somewhat out of date, however," she continued on almost apologetically. "The chieftainship of Thalmic has since passed to Aristotle." That particular bit of knowledge was a bit troubling to herself as well - it was no secret that Thanatos hated Aristotle with a fiery passion for having usurped a spot he believed rightfully his. While Odette still didn't fully understand his recent deal with the gods, she knew without a doubt that he could no longer maintain his position as Chief... But how would he feel about Aristotle stepping back in to take his place? More importantly, how would he feel about his mate and child still residing in the clan, under this new leadership? The questions had plagued her often, and unbidden they rose to her mind once more when Atalya mentioned it, but Odette was determined not to let her troubles cloud this happy meeting.
» While she was musing, Atalya seemed to have noticed Theoden, and almost immediately Odette's features lit up with all the pride of a new mother. "Oh, no," she said hastily in response to her suggestion of leaving, "not at all - Theoden would be glad for a new friend, as would I. Time to wake up, my sweetling," she called gently, gliding over to the bundle of legs and fur to nuzzle it tenderly. "Come and meet Miss Atalya." The colt woke slowly, lifting his small, finely-crafted head to blink blearily in the morning light, but within seconds of registering the presence of a stranger he was wide awake and alert, scrambling quickly to his spindly legs to get a better look at the mare. Tiny nubs of wings on his back, yet to be fully-fledged, opened and beat excitedly at the air, as his bottle-brush black tail flicked eagerly back and forth.

‘Here is one the Gods have truly blessed in beauty,’ thought Alya as she saw the mare’s smile. It seemed to almost light her finely-featured face from within, and a spark of true thankfulness made the words of welcome she spoke all the more meaningful. Such happy manners were something that Atalya hadn’t seen too much of in the past few weeks of her wandering; outside of the small Gods-fearing sect she’d been raised in, there were few who took very well to her worshipful nature. “I thank you kindly,” she said by way of simple gratitude, dipping her dished face. “It would please me greatly to intrude on your kindness for a while; this valley seems ideal for weathering such climate as Stormstime is apt to bring.” The sunset mare’s serene voice took on a note of gentle teasing, and her face a light smile to show that she meant the claim entirely in jest. Insofar as she could tell, though, Odette would likely insist that she did stay, for safety’s sake. It took only moments, though, for the nigh-angelic mare’s demeanor to shift dramatically. Seeming almost unhappy, Odette explained the change in leadership that had taken place, and Alya found herself nodding sympathetically. Though her hostess had elected not to go into depth about the reason for Thanatos’ departure as leader - and thus presumably from the valley altogether - it was plain from her sudden departure into contemplation that the absence of her mate was still hard to bear. “I am truly sorry for your loss, no matter what the manner in which it happened,” Atalya began carefully, unsure of how Odette might react to condolences, “but I am certain that the Gods will see you through any trial. They’ve already seen fit to bless you with a healthy foal.” Her face shifted into a serene expression of wonderment as her companion called forward the little colt, encouraging him with word and touch to rise and greet her. Keenly aware that he’d probably still be a bit unsteady upon his spindly legs at his age, Alya stepped a bit closer to admire his strikingly-marked coat. “My, you really are a handsome one, aren’t you?” she cooed, smiling at his fluttering little wings. “And so big and strong already! Your mother must be very proud.”A full-fledged smile on her face, the healer’s golden eyes moved from energetic son to watchful mother. “I wouldn’t want to intrude, Odette, but I do happen to be a healer with a small bit of skill. Would you like me to check him over, just in case? He looks quite hale, of course, but one can never be too careful.” She nodded sagely, eyes skimming the tricolored colt warmly. status;; done. word count;; 460 music;; Red Pony Suite: I. There was something so precious about the vast expanse of sleep. The darkness was like a warm blanket, secured around him in a protective cocoon. It was just so magical, that wonderful feeling when you found the perfect position and sank into the depths of an incredible dream world. Theoden had not been spared an extremely active imagination. His dreams were warped with consuming colors, every glimmer of reds and silvers and blues and millions more dripping wet like a vibrant oil painting. Strokes of greens and yellows surrounded him as his own golden eyes stared in awe at the beautiful array. He was in control here. With a flick of his rich ebony, gold streaked tail, colors began swirling together, melting into a brand new, never before seen rainbow. It was his own little piece of heaven.
The mention of his name seemed to rouse the pristine white colt just barely, though he sank back into his own little world when he was not beckoned for a short while longer. "Time to wake up, my sweetling," With that, charcoal lined ivory ears flicked among his short, spiked black and gold forelock which would soon grow into a thick, lush mane much like his proud father's. The small half Aeonian peeked open a glittering, sleep-filled gold eye with the gentle words, gaze narrowing on his angelic dam who stood just above him, reaching down to press her ashen muzzle to him in a gentle nudge, coaxing the bloodmarked colt to awaken from the world of his own creation. "Come and meet Miss Atalya." Curiously, though taking his own sweet time, the stud colt's head rose from it's resting place, nestled among his spidery legs and the soft, grassy ground. Gazing around himself in a sort of a daze, the brilliant violet and rose mare swung into his golden vision. A certain joy entered his expression and he sprang to his golden hooves, bouncing to life in mere miliseconds. She was like a creation of his mind, a part of his glorious painting, wrapped in an organized mess of sparkling color. Nearly in awe, the colt clung closely to his dam's side, though stared intensely at the antlered mare.
Deep, dark ebony wings stretched, the randomly dispersed gold feathers catching the gentle light of the sun as the fluttered back and forth with a fiery energy, his own ivory, gold tipped antlers nodding up and down as the small colt bobbed his head in earnest interest. “My, you really are a handsome one, aren’t you?” A sudden shyness swept over the uniquely marked colt and Theoden ducked beneath his mother's golden locks, hiding just briefly before peeking out of the thick golden waterfall of curls. “And so big and strong already! Your mother must be very proud.” With that, the colt seemed to warm up immediately, coming to life in a burst of energy. "I am!" Theo beamed, golden gaze shooting to his dam. "Just like daddy!" The colt studied Odette deeply, seeking approval of his words, before his gaze shot to Atlaya, as if suddenly remembering. "Uh, thank you!" Young voice was immature and undoubtedly higher than he would grow into, however he spoke articulately and each word was pronounced in an immaculate way. The strange mare then began speaking to his dam, words that were fairly foreign to the newborn, so he elected to remain quiet, small, still developing wings stretching above his head.
