I thought that it would be a great experience for us all to share the driving force behind our writing. By trying others ideas, one of us may find an exceptional amount of vigor where they hadn't expected, and help them through a lull of no muse! Pretty self explanatory. I'll go first!
- Jeremy Soule/Elder Scrolls OST
This really could go for any of my favorite OSTs (Assassins Creed, Darksiders 2, Lord of the Rings, etc), but hands down I probably listen to the Elder Scrolls OSTs the most. They are just... they're perfect for my writing! I love the medieval, swords, kingdoms, castles and magic! Of course, I have TRON Legacy for my sci-fi, as well as a few others, but I would lie to you if I said I listened to any other music whilst writing. The drums, pianos, violins, just all of it! Gah! I love them so much!
Trust me, listen to the Elder Scrolls OST. Either put that one on in the background and let it play whilst you write, or go find each disc (there are four, as the video states) and listen to them individually. They're stunning. Also recommened by Jermey Soule is the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. I promise you, you'll have no regrets. Some of my favorites are Far Horizons from Skyrim and Auriel's Ascension from Oblivion
- Darksiders 2 OST
It was already aforementioned, but I thought that I would throw it out there nonetheless. This is another one of my absolutely favorite OSTs to listen too! Though it starts out foreboding, once you get into the Theme's following Death's theme (the first song playing), I promise you'll have no regrets! Hell, if you have a sick and twisted character *coughcoughdiomedescoughcough* this kind of stuff is perfect. Plus, search them individually and you can get some super intense stuff like the Crowfather. Or, perhaps you like something with a little more cadence to it for just regular, none-dramatic writing; I'd recommend Makers Theme! Big jump between the two feels, I assure you!
- RainyMood
Trying to write something super fucking sad? I mean, so sad you're about to cry while writing it? I promise you, there is nothing more depressing (or, sometimes uplifting) than RainyMood. This wonderful website mixed with Ezio's Family will bring chills. I have goosebumps just writing this! Natural rain is good enough, but this constant lull of thunder and downpour of rain droplets is just a wonderful mood setter. You don't even have to be writing something depressing or sad! Sometimes rain is just a fantastic way to get the ball rolling in any scenario!
Throw this in with any of your OSTs, and you'll have an empowering atmosphere of muse in absolutely no time!
- Actual Nature
Sometimes I take my laptop out into the barn or out on the deck and just listen to actual nature. It's astounding the things you'll notice when you're looking at in analytically, as to enhance the realism of your writing. It also helps I have so many animals around, especially horses, that I can also observe the mannerisms of. Whether you have wildlife at your disposal or not, going outside still really helps me (if I can keep focused). Something about the sun, air, and the sounds really just invigorates me.
That's what gets me through my writing! What about you guys?

For the past month or so I've been completely obsessed with the Journey OST by Austin Wintory. That link will take you to a 57min track that has all of the ST's songs mixed together in the order you'd hear them in the actual game. However my favorite individual songs are Nascence (the opening/title theme), Apotheosis (the climax/finale theme), and I Was Born For This. That last one includes quotes from various sources including Beowulf, Joan of Arc, traditional Japanese haiku, and it makes me cry pretty much every time I listen to it. u_u;;
If you own a PC or PS3 I definitely recommend that you play it, or at least watch a playthrough on YouTube. It's only $15USD, takes between one or two hours to play start to finish, and has infinite replay value. Honestly, it's a beautiful, life-changing game. If you like awesome music, spectacular art, simple puzzles, and archaeology or lost civilizations, you'll love Journey. </shameless plug>
