Name: Grimoire Heart Familiar's Name: Vesper Desired Familiar: A female king cobra, measuring an impressive 16 feet (almost 5 m) in length, and colored from head to tail in a beautiful, pristine white. The only marking or color to be found on her body is a a pale lavender design near her head, most clearly visible when her hood is spread in the iconic intimidating stance of cobras (reference picture here). Her lidless eyes mirror Grimoire's own black-purple tint - not that anyone in their right mind would get close enough to see the color.
Like others of her species, Vesper is a truly deadly creature, named the 'king' for their massive size (the longest of all venomous snakes), deadly bite, and the fact that they prey mostly on other snakes. Each bite delivers an enormous dose of potent neurotoxic venom, enough to kill 20 people or animals as large as elephants within the hour. When threatened, she will rear up to a third of her body into the air to strike, flaring her hood and hissing in the trademark 'growling' hiss of the king cobra.
Yet despite it all Vesper is truly not 'dangerous' most of the time. She, like other king cobras, is a highly intelligent creature (Vesper all the more so because of her close link with Grimoire Heart) and would rather not waste energy and venom on a creature too large to swallow. Perhaps even more so than Grimm herself, Vesper is prideful and haughty, and disdains most others as unworthy of her time. Even when provoked, her first choice of defense would be to simply escape. However, woe to any who would present themselves as a threat, either to Vesper or her mistress. Grimoire Heart is the only creature the enormous snake views as her equal, being a literal part of her, and the two share a deep bond even without verbal communication. When either is threatened, Vesper will swiftly and aggressively leap to the defense with her fearsome natural weaponry.

The old alabaster minotaur nodded his head curtly. "Interesting choice, m'dear." Herzog turned, joints clicking with arthritis, and shoved a key into the grate gait. Swinging it open, he gave a simple click of his fingers, and the illusionary representation of Vesper slithered around in the center of the small arena, appearing out of thin air. The snake merely slithered about, forked tongue flicking. "Best your opponent mentally, and she shall be yours."

» Humph. What about her choice had been so "interesting" to the old minotaur? Given her own snake-like abilities, it seemed only fitting to have a serpent familiar bound to her - and not just any snake, but the reigning monarch of serpents. But she did not voice these thoughts aloud, merely nodded to Herzog and stepped through the yawning, inviting gates. No matter what she might have thought about the white minotaur, however, she had to hand it to him - the illusion of Vesper, though she knew it to be such, was dead on in its representation of her desired familiar, and even Grimoire felt a shiver of trepidation as she slowly approached the gleaming white coils. Although her task was not to take on the massive snake physically (thank the heavens), there was simply no way to approach such a deadly beast without the obligatory twinge of fear. Grimm didn't mind, of course. When this beautiful specimen of a serpent was bound to her mind and soul, it would be her enemies who would feel this very same fear creeping up their spines.
» "Hello, Gorgeous," she murmured softly, her gaze fixated on the small, elegant head and the lavender-purple marking right behind it. Grimoire stopped in her tracks a comfortable distance away, unwilling to provoke her future familiar more than she needed to and tempt the fatal bite. While she was confident that her own poison magic would safeguard her against many forms of venom, it still just wasn't prudent to establish herself as a threat to a king cobra this early on in the game. It was simply a question of a balance, a fine line to walk - any closer and she might appear more threatening than she liked, any farther and Vesper might simply lose interest and be on her way. If possible, Grimm wanted to make her stand her ground - without striking, of course - and keep that up for as long as she needed to, as Herzog had put it, "best her mentally". "Now now," she purred throatily, and though she questioned whether or not Vesper could hear the words distinctly due to her physiology, she hoped the gentle crooning tone would nevertheless convey her meaning. Besides, the white cobra wasn't just any ordinary snake - surely she would be able to understand her mistress by means that transcended words. "You and I won't have anything to fear from one another, Vesper. You will be the one creature I will ever trust completely, the only one who will have my total faith and confidence. You will be the solitary guardian of all my secrets and fears, and we will keep each other safe, you and I."
» A soft smile spread across her face as she spoke, one of her rare genuine smiles that was neither condescending nor sarcastic, and even tinged with wistfulness and longing. Now that was a face she would never show anyone asides from her own familiar, true enough to her promises just now. "You know, I've searched all my life for someone like you," she continued on conversationally, keeping her voice soft, even and calming despite the wary eye she kept on the snake's stance. With the king cobra, one simply couldn't let one's guard down at any moment; a change of whim, a sudden decision, and she could transition from a non-threatening mood to a biting mood. "I thought it was Ouroboros at first, the backstabbing son of a bitch. He seemed strong, intelligent, a natural-born leader... everything I was looking for in a stallion - in a mate." Her expression hardened with years of pent-up hatred, but she managed to quell it and settled for looking sour and resentful. "Well, of course he proved me wrong, and even managed to kill our foal while he was at it. I'll never tell this to another soul - but actually I'm a little bit glad he did. Having to bear the child of a spineless cunt like that... I might have killed it myself. I suppose that makes me a terrible mare... But you knew that already, didn't you Vesper?" She paused for a moment in her speech to give the massive snake an appreciative once-over again, reminded yet again of just how wonderful it would be to have a companion who understood her perhaps even better than she understood herself. Yes, Grimoire Heart was a terrible mare - she'd come to terms with that years ago when she discovered that she could deliberately do many things that others might find abhorrent - but this familiar would never judge or disagree, and she was confident that Vesper was just the same as her. "If there's one good thing that came from that whole ordeal, though, it's that I now know better than to look for someone else to be my king and my leader. I'll be my own leader without putting that kind of trust in anyone but myself, and now I have the perfect chance, to turn Selisona into the greatest clan in Aeon. But with you, I won't have to be alone on that throne. I can't believe it's taken me this long to realize that the answer was so simple. I can't trust in anyone but myself - but you are myself, Vesper, and if you come with me and trust in me as I do in you, we will be simply unstoppable together."

Admin Note: Sorry, Ayu! That's a little too borderline of god playing the familiar for my taste. Just some minor edits, here and there. You'll know how the familiar responds once she responds, haha.

Vesper watched the iridescent mare carefully, beady black eyes locked on as if some sort of targeting mechanism. It seemingly listened intently, but there was no other inclination of such actions besides a steady stare. Hovering tall as was typical for her kind, Vesper stays, swiveling around to watch Grim, unspeaking.
Keep trying.

Then again, her seemingly apathetic attitude could have been any number of things - without the muscles to form proper facial expressions, that blank, serpentine stare could have meant she was thinking, or bored, or happy, or even annoyed, anything at all. The only good sign that resulted from all Grimm's previous efforts was the fact that the cobra hadn't lashed out at her with those fearsome fangs yet, which she took to mean that Vesper had accepted the fact that she wasn't trying to eat her. A lack of aggression, however, certainly did not mean acceptance as a soul-bound familiar, and Grimoire knew full well that she would have to continue and redouble her attempts to subdue the proud, finicky snake.
» But the dappled mare did not seem overly disheartened by the lackluster response from Vesper - in fact, as a silence stretched between them and the serpent showed no signs of submitting to her mistress, a grin began spreading over the mare's elegant features, a grin that was at once amused, pleased, and rather excited in an almost hungry, feral manner. "Yes..." she breathed, eyes a-glimmer with a voracious shine that almost looked out of place on such a delicate, fine visage; as the word trailed out slowly from her lips it sounded eerily similar to the serpent's own hiss. Although she made no outward change, in that one instant it was as though a viper within her was waking up, finally showing its true serpentine colors through the exterior of a pretty mare; all she needed now was slit pupils in her eyes and a forked tongue to flicker out through those fangs she already had. "Yes, I'd expect nothing less from you, Vesper." Pleased grin still firmly in place, she began to set out at a slow walk around the white cobra, each hoof moving slowly and deliberately as she circled, careful to watch for any sudden movements from the soon-to-be familiar, always giving her a comfortable distance. "I don't want a familiar who would bind itself to the first one who comes asking. I don't want a familiar who would follow anyone, who would choose a master without judging the worth of the master first with its own eyes. I want a familiar who will follow me because I am strong, because I am unwavering in my purpose, because I have my weaknesses that I acknowledge and strive to overcome." As she spoke her voice became stronger, more urgent, as though all the agitation that she kept bottled up inside was finally finding an outlet through her words. Her pacing, too, picked up some speed, but the danger of being so close to such a massive creature of killing was enough to keep her steps measured and controlled. "I am patient, and what I want I will take, by any means necessary. Surely you know this already, but if I must prove it to you I will stay here and speak to you as long as it takes until you accept me as your mistress. You may resist me, and I will take that as a token of your selectivity and good judgment when choosing to bind yourself. But you will not resist me forever, and you will accept me, because I am everything you could wish for in a mistress. And when that happens, you will find that every moment that you spent doubting me has been wasted." Finally she stopped, once more facing Vesper head-on, and she said, "I am well aware of my strengths, and flaws, and vices, Vesper. I can accept them as a part of me, accept you as a part of me, and love you all the more for it. Come to me, and you will see."

Vesper continued to watch the mare. When she became agitated, the cobra hissed at her, feeling the fellow animal's irritation boiling. White fangs sparkled in the sunlight. Then, the mare continued, almost with a demanding tone. The snake slid across the sandy tournament floor, sliding closer to the mare, her "crown" flared. Again she hissed.
Keep it up, Grimoire Heart!
